Peter Berger’s WW1 Militaerpass lists him as entering Prussian military service 6 November 1915, as an Ersatz Recruit, for Field Artillery Regiment 37.

On 23 December 1915, he was sent to Field Artillery Regiment 97.

As a member of Feld Artillerie Regiment 97 (Landwehr Division 10), he was in combat in the East, December 1915, Krewo, Smorgon, Narotsch See, Tweretsch.  In 1916 and 1917, he was in combat Krewo, Smorgon, Narotsch See, Tweretsch, Kowel, Styr-Stochod. In December 1917, they observed the cease fire.

In early 1918, they were in Kozlow, Wohlymien area.  27 March 1918, the division was sent to the West front, between Maas and Mosel.  June and July 1918, they were between the Aisne and the Marne. Mid to later July, they were flighting at Soissons and Reims.  From 26-29 July, they were dfenesivelu flightinh between the Marne and Vesle.

From 5-28 September 1918, they were fighting at Flanders.

He was noted as “missing” 28 September 1918.

He was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd Class, 3 July 1918.

On 16 October 1919, Berger was released from military service and received his final pay.

Absolutely beautiful, ornate Iron Cross 2nd Class award document, to Kanonier Peter Berger, 7 Batterie Field Artillery Regiment 97.  It was earned on 3 July and awarded 4 July 1918.  It is signed by a major and regiment commander.

Document has 4 way folds.

Original WW1 German Iron Cross 2nd Class K.O. Königliches Münzamt Orden, Berlin

Also with the set is Peter Berger’s Iron Cross 2nd Class.

The Iron Cross’ suspension ring is maker marked, K.O., for the maker, Königliches Münzamt Orden, Berlin.  The black iron center is magnetic and has surface rust. The silver frame has some black patina. Measures about 43 mm across. 

Super to find this set intact on the flea market in the Saar. Usually, sellers will split WW1 and WW2 and sell off any medals.  Not the case with the Peter Berger set.
